Steven James, stunned by his own performance, surpassed expectations to outshine Olympic champions at an international horse trial. The 24-year-old from Hartlepool secured third place at the Windsor International Horse Trials, leaving even the Princess Royal, who presented the award, astonished. Competing against 75 top-ranked opponents, Steven’s achievement was remarkable, considering it was his first event at this level. “I’d never done a three day event before, so I was just going for the experience and to give it a try. I didn’t expect anything like this,” said Steven of Southbrooke Farm on Catcote Road. “Beating Olympic champions was unbelievable, and Princess Anne was equally surprised it was my first three day event.”
